Abstract
The authors present a rule-based self-tuning procedure for industrial PID controllers. It is based on theoretical and heuristic principles together with the pattern recognition approach introduced by E.H. Bristol (1977) and operational strategies proposed by T.W. Kraus and T.J. Myron (1984). The main concepts are discussed, the procedure is described, and a sample of the rules is presented. Computational results are included to illustrate the properties and behavior of the tuning procedure
