Abstract :
The use of decision theory concepts in detecting and correcting software faults is considered. The concepts of software faults and failure, symptoms and corrective actions are presented as a way of viewing the software design and test portion of a software development effort. It is shown how probabilistic estimates of software failure based on project histories can be used in a decision-making setting to reduce fault correction cost and time. An algorithm which computes the decision procedure is discussed as well as computational considerations. The impact of the decision-theory model on large-scale software development efforts is presented
