Abstract :
Intermodal inteference technology is a novel branch of optic-fiber sensor technique. Recently, with the advantages of simple structure and high stability, intermodal interference technology has attracted more people´s eyes. In this paper, we investigate the theoretical analysis and experiment results of intermodal interference in several polarization maintaining optic fibers such as elliptical core fiber, panda fiber and two-hole PCF. The mode propagation characteristics, dual-mode operation range and intermodal interference propagation constant difference of these fibers are analysised comparatively. And an experiment is setup to demonstrate the thoerical simulation results and the feasibility of optic-fiber sensors based on intermodal interference technology. The research results show that all these three fiber can be used to design intermodal sensors for measuring extern disturbance such as strain, temperature and stress etc.
