Abstract :
Electricity in remote communities is usually provided by diesel power plants at relatively high costs. This issue can be addressed with the addition of renewable energy sources such as wind and PV. However, due to the intermittent and fluctuating characteristics of the power produced by these sources, the dispatch of the diesel gensets for operation with variable (droop-based) frequency, high efficiency and reduced unit cycling becomes more difficult. A battery energy storage system (BESS) with a suitable control strategy can simplify this task and improve the power quality. This paper discusses the operation of a hybrid system with a three-phase diesel power plant and a single-phase distribution network with intermittent sources. The per-phase dq control scheme used in the BESS allows energy management with superior power quality for operation with variable frequencies.
