Abstract
The computation of the fractal dimension of a 2-dimensional image has become an important issue in various image processing applications such as texture analysis. The fractal dimension is a measure of the similarity in a multiresolution representation. An alternating sequential filter (ASF), a morphological transformation, is used to generate such a representation. The surface areas at different resolutions, computed using a piecewise planar approximation, are used to estimate the fractal dimension. Comparisons with existing methods are done to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. The robustness to noise is also demonstrated. Testing was done on synthetic and natural textured images
