Abstract :
Motion compensation of image data has long been used for video compression. “Meta-motion” compensation, or motion compensation of motion vectors is presented as a new approach to data compression useful in very low bit rate (VLB) applications. Whereas present motion coding simply takes advantage of temporal redundancies among images, this new, computationally simple approach takes advantage of temporal redundancies between subsequent vector fields to efficiently code motion. Taking advantage of both the temporal redundancy of motion vectors and the “mapping” property of motion vectors, this method is shown to decrease the bit rate for vector coding in sequences with complex motion
