Abstract
At the Tritium System Test Assembly (TSTA) of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), column-I is the first in the train of four distillation columns designed to separate a feed of six components. This distillation operation is in downstream area with respect to the fusion cycle. In this report we discuss the process control issues related to the operation of column-I. We state the control problem and the goals to be achieved, present the results of the step tests on the column and discuss modeling issues, and use the system identification results of to design proportional-integral (PI) controllers for the plant. We propose and implement some advanced control strategies to improve performance of the control structure
