Abstract :
The evolution of an integrated manufacturing organization in the logic wafer fabricator at IBM´s semiconductor facility in Essex Junction, Vermont is discussed. In 1987, the manufacturing organization had sole responsibility for production operations and was dependent on support groups for solutions to technical and planning problems. Since then, equipment maintenance and process control engineering responsibilities have been integrated into manufacturing. The organizational changes required to implement the integration of these responsibilities are described. A concerted effort was made throughout integration to effect a smooth transition. This effort included an intensive education program for manufacturing personnel and managers. Before technical responsibilities were transferred, however, manufacturing operators attended academic courses and received on-the-job training (internships) from engineers, which later enabled them to become process technicians in manufacturing. A formal, documented procedure was established for the transfer of technical responsibility. The author also describes communication interfaces within the organization, personnel issues, and future directions. Work schedules are shown along with the implications for technical coverage and organizational structure
