Abstract
Production engineers´ decision making activities have been observed through their verbal protocols while they were performing an assembly planning task in an experiment. The verbal protocols reveal the importance of various heuristic rules and the top-down strategy to efficient assembly planning. The implications of experimental findings in the design of the computer-aided assembly planning system are discussed
