Abstract :
This paper describes a method of optimal control for a second order system or of a sub-optimal control for a higher order system which can be approximated to second order. The method is based on the prediction of the optimal trajectory in the state space and from such prediction a logical decision as to the input of the system is drawn. The prediction is realized by the use of a fast-time linearized second order equivalent model. The effectiveness of the optimal predictive controller is examined by a digital simulation study for the response of a synchronous machine connected to an infinite bus under various input and initial conditions. This paper also gives an analysis on the stability of the overall system controlled by the optimal predictive controller.
