Abstract :
The impact of transporting SDH (synchronous digital hierarchy) payloads by radio relay systems is examined. In particular, the technical characteristics of SDH-DRR (digital radio relay) and the RF channel widths required to carry the STM-1 (synchronous transport module-1) signal are considered. It is concluded that radio systems can be used to carry SDH payloads; the introduction of SDH-DRRs will result in radio and fiber systems being regarded as supportive rather than competitive media; and the capital investment in existing infrastructure on existing radio routes should be exploited to provide economic SDH-DMR (digital microwave radio) capacity
