Abstract :
Faults in transmission lines are very common and it comes along with a huge penalty from the consumer as well as from the suppliers end. A fault in a system should be dealt very firmly and fast lest it would damage other accessories along the transmission line. In this paper, a single phase fault and a three phase fault has been simulated using Alternating Transient Program (ATP) and the energy content in them has been studied via Wavelet Packet Transform (WPT). For the comparative analysis, five different mother wavelets have been considered. The parameter chosen for fault recognition is the energy content in all the available levels of decomposition. From the analysis that has been shown in this paper, it can be concluded that for a particular fault, a particular mother wavelet is more suitable in distinguishing between the pre-and the post fault conditions.
