Advanced network management needs for optical networks

The authors discuss current and future optical network architectures and effective strategies for efficient network management. It is noted that, to assure the best possible network performance, network management equipment must not only provide surveillance and diagnostic data but must also provide access to all channels embedded in the transport. The T3AS monitor, access, and test system has been developed to provide integrated transport access unit (ITAU) functionality.
