Abstract
The military precedence-based assured service (PBAS) has been a prominent topic of discussion for the past several years. A community effort, where stakeholders from key GIG organizations and programs have worked collaboratively in a working group environment, has been used to define the future GIG Quality of Service (QoS) architecture. Whereas there are no official PBAS requirements for converged services in the GIG, there is a general consensus within this community that a PBAS capability is needed and that the associated functions and requirements should be clearly defined and documented. This paper provides a refined view and some analysis of military precedence concepts, which are considered in a reasonable operational context, and provides a metric-based model for defining military precedence requirements. Expected PBAS behaviors within the GIG IP network environment are described and a high-level PBAS engineering framework is presented.
