Abstract
The measured performance of the cavity element above demonstrates its applicability for a transmit array at 30 GHz. A relatively large aperture area can be efficiently excited by a single point feed. Fewer elements are thus required in the array architecture, simplifying the feed network and reducing the associated feed losses. This architecture also provides thick metallic areas which are required for device integration as well as providing an inherent heat sink necessary for the medium power amplifiers to be integrated. The array architecture presented indicates that a directivity of 37 dB is achievable. A high directivity is necessary to satisfy the system requirements. The design of the array architecture is amenable to device integration with a relatively large area available for heat extraction. This array architecture is being pursued for a portable communications terminal.
