Abstract
This paper addresses the problems of scaling and roundoff in fixed-point realizations of linear controllers. Both transfer function and state realizations are considered. It is suggested that partial sums be carried out in double precision, as this alleviates both the scaling and the roundoff problems. Simulation results show that some noise appears to be desirable, to quench nonlinear oscillations.
