Abstract :
The Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) Handheld, Manpack, Small Form Fit (HMS) radios are being developed for manned as well as unmanned and unattended platforms. Each platform that embeds a JTRS HMS set brings along its own concept of operation creating unique networking challenges in terms of achieving a seamless, interoperable, mobile, and adhoc communications architecture. To design and develop these radios within established schedule and cost objectives, the program must overcome a number of technical challenges. This paper will identify the driving requirements, outline the technical challenges, and propose optimal solutions that balance networking functionality and waveform interoperability while still meeting Size, Weight, Power, Cost, and Schedule objectives.
