Chaos in the one generator system with excitation feedback

Abstract :
We study a 7-dimensional model of the one machine-infinite bus equipped with excitation system for the existence of complicated dynamics. We first reduce the system to 4 dimensions using singular perturbation techniques. Within the 4-dimensional system we "locate" an embedded near-integrable two-degree Hamiltonian system that possesses (horseshoe) chaos for certain parameter ranges. (Some of these parameter ranges are not practical). The transition from the near-integrable to the 4-d model does not nullify the complicated structure introduced by chaos. Work is now in progress to show explicitly that this complicated structure persists in the full 7-dimensional system and for practical, i.e. typical, set of parameter ranges.
