Abstract
In this paper we present a medium access scheme for vehicular ad-hoc networks which is based on clustering of the vehicles. This method leverages contention-free and contention-based MAC (Medium Access Control), to support different requirements of safety and non-safety messages. Inter-cluster interference avoidance is also supported. Thus the effect of hidden stations can be minimized, which leads to a more reliable data transfer than IEEE 802.11 based systems can provide. Simulation results confirm the superior performance of the proposed algorithm in terms of average cluster head (CH) lifetime, average number of retransmission, average number of collision, and average End-to-End delay.
