Abstract
Offshore wind power is nowadays the most promising marine renewable energy. In the North Sea, several wind farms have been constructed near the coastline. However the most interesting resource is located far from the coasts; where the wind is purely offshore wind, where turbulence and environmental impact are less important and winds are high and therefore more profitable. But working further from the coast implies higher water depth and higher technological barriers that must be faced. The first engineering challenge that must be overcome is wind assessment at high and very high water depth. Nowadays there is not any certified meteorological floating buoy, accepted by the wind industry, able to measure winds at the hub height, as well as the wind profile at any position in the middle of the sea. This is the aim of IDERMAR METEO, to become the first meteorological buoy able to satisfy the needs of the wind industry; able to measure, transform and send meteo-oceans data from any point in the middle of the sea, with autonomy and able to be remote controlled.
