Abstract :
Describes a new algorithm for approximately reconstructing a 2D binary pattern from its two orthogonal 1D projections, under the constraint that the shape of the reconstructed binary pattern must represent a reasonable cross section of a coronary artery. In the hierarchical search process of this multiresolution algorithm, most of the branches are pruned to satisfy a shape constraint such as smoothness. Imposing adjacent-slice similarities on the reconstructions of a stack of consecutive transverse slices of the arterial lumen from two mutually orthogonal (`biplane´) X-ray projections, and the constraint of smoothness, the 3D shape of the coronary artery can be estimated
