Abstract
An ATM (asynchronous transfer mode)-based broadband network architecture and a picture coding algorithm for a high-quality HDTV (high-definition television) transmission system are proposed. The HDTV coding algorithm is based on subband coding, and its suitability for maintaining original high picture quality has been confirmed. Computer simulation results show that SNR is about 38 dB when average entropy is 1 b/pel. The coding algorithm can be applied to HDTV transmission between broadcast stations by optimizing its coding parameters
