Abstract
The spatial response and sampling properties of a ship-mounted, four-beam Doppler current profiler are considered. We obtain expressions for the effect of beamwidth, beam separation, and block averaging on the system response. We observe that spatial aliasing may occur above a certain depth, and that pulse width reduction cannot reduce vertical resolution beyond a limit imposed by system geometry.
