Abstract :
In order to investigate the significance of the design of link layer protocols in the MBC (meteor burst combination) system, a two-node MBC model has been developed. A performance investigation of MBC on the random intermittent channel with random error assumption has been conducted. Two different link protocols have been simulated: (1) unblocked packet transmission with stop-and-wait automatic repeat request (ARQ) and (2) blocked packet transmission with the same ARQ scheme. Two different channel acquisition methods have been studied: the Tx polling only and Tx/Rx polling schemes. Two system configurations, half-duplex and full-duplex, have been investigated. Simulation results for the error-free case and the random error case are presented. It is found that protocols and system configurations play very important roles in the performance of the MBC. Different polling schemes, however, seem to have little effect on the channel utilization efficiency
