Abstract
A functional prototype of a knowledge-based alarming system for intensive monitoring is introduced. The system automatically collects all the data it requires from the patient monitor and the patient data management system of the intensive care unit. Both value and trend data are employed. The system alarms about specific pathological conditions. During clinical testing the alarming system was significantly more specific than conventional limit alarms. In addition, the system did not miss any of the pathological conditions it was designed to detect
