  • Abstract
It is shown that there exists an equivalent inner product under which one-dimensional acoustic problems with partially absorbent terminations orthogonally decouple and thus yield to separation of variables. The exact analytic diagonal form that is obtained can be truncated to produce numerical approximations of remarkable accuracy. Moreover, such truncations show close agreement with experimental findings. The results are of interest in connection with active noise control
