Abstract
It was recently suggested that a binary payload and a binary label might be optically multiplexed into a single quaternary packet. In this paper we use computer simulations to investigate the bit error rate performance of this packet when it is propagated through different types of fiber. Results suggest that the maximum propagation distance for a packet composed by a 10 Gb/s payload and a 2.5 Gb/s label is around 300 km for a NZD fiber. We also analyze the case in which there is a time misalignment between the label and payload.
