Abstract
We consider the performance of Integrated Services Digital Networks (ISDNs) with voice and data users, and limited buffering under different flow control policies. Flow control is exercised on the data packets. A matrix decomposition method is developed to solve for the equilibrium probabilities. The method reduces the computational complexity of the problem significantly. It is shown to be equivalent to a flow redirection method. Comparison of the flow control methods with movable boundary methods has shown that proportional flow control yields superior performance for heavier traffic load. The results are also compared with those obtained by a hybrid scheme that utilizes proportional flow control along with a movable boundary strategy.
