Abstract :
Our early 1980s vintage energy management system (EMS) is being called upon to handle the new functions and interfaces of an open access world with ISOs, different environmental compliance requirements, with fully unbundled power and ancillary services. While it operated through a direct hit from a tornado on the building, it cannot accommodate the changes needed next. The inherent design of the system is limited in its ability to interface with newer systems or functions and we have maxed out its expansion capacity in many key areas. We have been moving many of the EMS functions to distributed PCs and are now preparing to move/replace the remaining functions with an open system EMS termed EMSNova. The new system is more flexible, expandable and rides on modem computer hardware and software since it is based on Windows NT, Oracle database, TCP/IP fast Ethernet, standard Internet browser, and MS Cluster technology
