Abstract :
The value of optimal power flow (OPF) as used in a vertically integrated electric utility (VIU) is reviewed and contrasted with the business needs of the new market or partial market based electric energy businesses. The OPF optimization methods are compared to market optimization methods as the business problem changes in the market environment. The advantages and disadvantages of using OPF are reviewed. Finally, some conclusions are drawn with respect to where the effort should be directed to continue the future development of the OPF tool to maximize its value in the future
