Abstract
Project 8637-HIDICCA has been started at the end of 1993 by a consortium of European companies and research centres, within the Framework IV of ESPRIT, with the purpose to develop a new generation Smart Card, for public key algorithm, having the possibility of embedding large amounts of byte programmable non volatile memory. Main characteristics are high security, enhanced by the parallel development of the card and the operating system, flexibility, to allow optimised solutions for different applications, and low cost. A new type of EEPROM memory cell has been developed to allow the incorporation of large memory blocks. The first silicon of the new card is expected within August 1996
