Abstract
This paper outlines the background to the standardisation of PCTE. It briefly covers its origins, current status and future plans as well as an overview of current announced commercial backing and related activities. PCTE arose out of one of the first CEC sponsored ESPRIT collaborative research projects. ESPRIT Project 32 was formally titled `A Basis for a Portable Common Tool Environment´. The formal objectives of the PCTE project were to define the necessary interface specifications and to implement the basic utilities and a working prototype of a portable common tool environment to support tool development
