Abstract
A two layer structure including an optical cell switching network and an electrical header processing network is a realistic solution for optically transparent photonic ATM switches that takes advantage of both photonic and electronic technologies. The optical signal is handled (switching and buffering) at the cell level instead of at the bit level. Relatively low speed CMOS VLSI can thus be used for the system with the help of a small section of high speed electronics which is mostly used in the front end and each control interface. A combination of both the ATM and WDM techniques may provide an ultimate version for optical networking with almost unlimited capacity
