Abstract :
INTELSAT Management, which operates and maintains the system on a daily basis on behalf of the Signatories reports to the INTELSAT Board of Governors on a quarterly basis for authorisation for new projects, services, and a range of other issues. The Board is supported in its work by two Advisory Committees, (Planning and Technical), which report directly to the Board of Governors. The Board is also assisted by other fora held during the course of the year. INTELSAT is embarking upon restructuring itself into two organisations. INTELSAT IGO (Intergovernmental Organisation) will remain focused on INTELSAT´s original mission of providing international transmission capacity on a non discriminatory basis. The service area concentrated on will be maintaining and growing INTELSAT´s core PSTN, and voice/data markets. The INTELSAT affiliate or INC, will concentrate on the new growth markets of entertainment TV and multimedia, and will not be bound by INTELSAT´s original operating agreements. It is envisaged that some of the satellites currently operated by INTELSAT would be transferred into the new affiliate. When the current series of IS-VIII satellites, together with the DTH TV satellite K-TV have been successfully launched and deployed, by mid 1999, INTELSAT will operate a fleet of 22 station kept satellites. INTELSAT also intends to lease capacity from the INSAT satellite due to be deployed at 83 E. For planning and operational matters the system is split into four main regions arising from geographical proximity: the Atlantic Ocean Region, Indian Ocean Region; Asia-Pacific Region; and the Pacific Ocean Region
