  • Abstract
    We investigate the outage capacity of free-space optical communication links in the presence of atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors. An expression for the outage probability is derived and we show that optimizing the transmitted beam width with respect to detector size and pointing error variance maximizes the achievable rates
