Abstract
To improve software engineering practice some people advocate a process improvement approach, while others promote increased use of tools and technology. This paper discusses the relationship between a process-oriented and technology-oriented approach to software improvement. The notion of a computer-aided sub-process (CASP) is advanced as a way of reconciling these views. The CASP approach is described, and illustrated with reference to an existing use of the CASP approach in an industrial setting
