Abstract
The water quality in the urban rivers of Chaohu City, Anhui Province is very poor owing to untreated wastewater disposal and stagnant flow in the rivers. In the present study MIKE 11 model has been applied in evaluating the efficiency of the water diversion project in Chaohu City. The results indicate that with the existing hydraulic structures only part of the urban rivers can be flushed with the external freshwater from the neighboring Chaohu Lake. By updating of 2 existing culverts into controllable sluice gates and with 2 new pumping stations all the main urban rivers can be completely flushed. The study clearly shows the importance of hydraulic structures in improvement of water diversion effects.
