Abstract
The two-dimensional (2D) discrete cosine transform (DCT) and the subsequent quantization of the transform coefficients are two computationally demanding steps of any DCT-based video encoder. A joint implementation for computing 1D DCT and quantization of the transform coefficients has been proposed, on the other hand, distributed arithmetic has been utilized to compute 1D DCT with ROM accumulators (RACs) resulting in less area while keeping the same structural regularity. In this paper we apply distributed arithmetic to joint implementation of computation of DCT and quantization of the coefficients and extend the method to 2D DCT. It is shown the proposed method requires less hardware compared to the conventional methods
