Abstract
Today the two technologies electronic device description language and field device tool exist for device integration. This paper describes a concept that integrates the advantages of both technologies into a single consistent concept. The new concept defines a model for device integration and a client-server architecture that makes use of the various advantages of OPC Unified Architecture. The authors validated the concept by setting up a comprehensive prototype including different field devices from process and factory automation. The positive results of the evaluation show that the described concept is a sustainable basis for device integration.
