Abstract :
A critical need exists for defining the formal software development life-cycle that addresses both forward and reverse software development. The authors differentiate between reverse engineering, the software activity performed to extract design information from code, and re-engineering, the software activity that uses reverse engineering to extract the design and the documentation from the existing code. This paper is based on the work at Grumman Data Systems Division. It describes the strawman approach for such an extended software development life-cycle and discusses the salient features of each major development function
