In recent years, global food, energy and environmental issues become increasingly prominent. Expansion of urban sprawl results in the “City Syndrome”, such as high population, industrial concentration, serious pollution and “heat island” effect escalation. It also brought a large number of species extinction, global environmental pollution and global climate change. China is in the stage of rapid development of urbanization, the problem is particularly prominent. How to develop our environment, society and economy sustainably has become an important issue. This paper discussed the origins and development context of urban agriculture. By analysis of the multiple functions of urban agriculture, preliminary exploration of the sustainable urban planning model of China is made.
