Abstract :
This paper makes a study of SMES fed by a voltage source converter (VSMES). The digital simulation is carried out to investigate both the steady and dynamic characteristics of the VSMES. Based on it a practical robust control scheme is proposed considering the VSMES and the excitation of the generator assembly. The motivation of designing such controller is to improve both the stability and the voltage regulation quality in a relatively wide operation range. In addition to the simulation a prototype of the VSMES system is realized and experimented in the laboratory.
