Abstract :
A Written-PoleTM brand of variable magnetic pole AC motor is used to drive a generator to produce DC power to be used in place of batteries and rectifiers for critical loads. The motor-generator set starts with low inrush current, has very high inertia, and uses flywheel energy storage to ride-through momentary power interruptions while the DC output remains very stable. An internal combustion engine is integrally mounted on the M-G sets and is used to drive the system during long, extended utility outages. The engine is started using the M-G set inertia instead of a battery. The Written-Pole TM motor converts to a generator while the engine is the prime mover. This supplies AC power for loads such as air conditioners for electronics. The system has been field-tested and is in commercial production
