Abstract :
Voids within insulation layers or between conductors and mica based insulation can be detected by a “tap test” where a change in sound occurs when an impact site coincides with a void. A more searching method results when this sound is processed through an acoustic spectrum analyzer. Data accumulated from application of this technique to detect thermal deterioration and other defects in Roebel bars is presented
