Abstract :
To aid in the BPX (Burning Plasma Experiment) toroidal field assembly process, the coils will be bonded together by the turn to turn insulation. The turn to turn insulation consists of Spaulrad-S sheet material with two layers of S-glass cloth on each side; the coil assembly will be vacuum pressure impregnated with epoxy. Preliminary irradiation and mechanical testing has been performed on specimens made from Shell Chemical Epon Resin 9405/Curing Agent 9470. Spaulrad-S is a high-pressure laminate of polyimide resin reinforced with S-glass (boron free) cloth. This material was specifically developed for high radiation resistance in conjunction with good electrical/mechanical properties. Butt joints in Spaulrad sheets will be required to obtain a single sheet in the size required by BPX. U-shaped cuffs pre-molded from 0.032-in Spaulrad material will insulate the turn edges. The cuffs are machined for a butt/lap joint that will allow for complete coverage around each turn
