Abstract
Summary form only given. One of the recurring questions in the history of oceanic exploration is, “Where did Ulysses actually go during his ten year voyage?” Until recently, it was always assumed that the setting for the adventures described in Homer´s Odyssey was enclosed by the Mediterranean Sea. However, several theories have now been advanced by various writers that contend that Ulysses ventured beyond the Pillars of Hercules at Gibraltar and that his encounters with strange peoples and places took place around or even across the broad Atlantic Ocean. The paper summarizes some of the writings on the subject, both traditional interpretations and those of a more “adventurous” nature. The oceanographic conditions that might support a more extended voyage are also examined along with other historical writings that lend credence to the idea that ancient mariners may have been more sophisticated and capable than previously thought. Evidence, albeit, circumstantial, that Mediterranean mariners actually visited Nova Scotia in the distant past is examined with support of geographical, geologic, natural and oceanographic references
