Abstract
This paper reports on efforts to develop alternative assessment instruments for design learning. The authors discuss three tools they have developed to assess the development of design skills and knowledge in a freshman level Introduction to Design course. These tools include portfolios assessment, cognitive maps and a writing technique called “freewriting”. Preliminary results of their experiments and future plans for research are presented
