Abstract :
Novel coded modulation formats defined over an expanded set of signals varying both in phase and frequency are presented. The novel schemes combine FSK (frequency-shift-keying) and PSK (phase-shift-keying) modulation and make use of trellis coding and Viterbi decoding to improve error performance over uncoded modulation. General equations for the minimum Euclidean distances in the partitioned sets are presented. Furthermore, various extensions to published data which include longer constraint lengths and codes for multidimensional modulation and coding using phase/frequency modulation are discussed
