Abstract :
Describes avionics database issues in systems fielded by the Air Force, and the impact of integrated avionics on the database problem, and contrast current approaches to management of avionics data with object-oriented design (OOD) approaches being developed under the FIRM (Functionally Integrated Resource Manager) Program. Potential cost savings during development and maintenance that could result from using an OOD are discussed, as well as issues and tradeoffs in implementing an efficient OOD in Ada. The FIRM program has been initiated to define the requirements, develop a conceptual design and demonstrate critical components of a real-time database management system for avionics
