Abstract :
Historically, the application of delayed auto-reclose and synchronising at mesh design substations has proven technically challenging, necessitating a bespoke and complex solution to providing this functionality. Coincident with the emergence of multifunctional relaybased solutions, circa 2000, National Grid recognised that both its asset replacement programme, and the expansion of the transmission system, needed to align with world practice and solution architecture. National Grid subsequently embarked upon a programme of replacement at both 400 kV & 275 kV, which utilised modern technologies to integrate DAR and synchronising functionality.
